Sigma's New 24-70 f/2.8 HSM Lens for Full-Frame Sensors

| | Retweet | Share
sigma24-70.jpg

I'm very interested to see how the new Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM lens gets reviewed. It's a little pricey at $900 list but that's still about half the price of the comparable Nikon full-frame mid-range f/2.8 zoom. (Being that it's a Sigma lens, the same unit is obviously also available for a wide range of other manufacturers' SLRs, although inventory is pretty thin at most vendors right now.

My Moscot Spirit glasses, which I love, plus some other Saturday morning staples... trying to maybe work on capturing the essence of everyday objects a little more often.

This is best viewed in a slightly larger format. (Yes, I know I say that all the time - having a blog that mixes photos and text leads to certain compromises in layout.)

So there's about 4 photos of me at the event, and I think I'm staring into my laptop in 2 of them (I'd point out this one was taken _between_ speakers.) In my defense, everyone else in the shots is staring at the ir laptops too.

20 second long exposure, with a graduated ND filter on the lower half of the image (not that I can tell, frankly.) I love the Flatiron building -- Broadway's meandering path produces a lot of the city's more interesting buildings.

Empire State Valentine

The new LED lighting was in full effect with this weekend's great red-pink-white Valentine's Day lighting on the Empire State Building. Crystal-clear winter weather didn't hurt either.

Weekend project: Beef Chili

I've been trying to cook more "comfort food" type stuff lately... the newest is a big pot of chili, which started with 4 lbs of chuck roast and took about 3 hours total before turning into the mahogany goodness shown here.

Not too spicy - just a hint - and just about heaven with some pepper jack cheese, white rice and a can of Pork Slap beer. But you'd better have a movie to watch or a book to read while you wait on this one to cook; even with the beef pre-browned, it takes another 2.5 hours to get there.

Playing around a bit with simulated tilt-shift. Like HDR or Panos, this really only works for a very specific type of photo, but when it does, it's a great technique to have in the bag, especially given that I'm not ever going to spend the $2000+ for a true tilt-shift lens. There's a color version of this shot as well, but I prefer the black and white one.

Happy Birthday, Mochi!

Happy Birthday Mochi, originally uploaded by karlo.

It's the little pooper's 1st birthday today. We've had him in the house for about 8 months, and it's hard to believe how much he's grown since his puppy days. He's more than doubled in weight (from 12 lbs to 25 lbs) but his favorite morning routine remains finding a patch of sun and sleeping in for an extra hour or two after breakfast.

The Colossal Media / Banksy collaboration at the corner of Grand and Wooster is great. I love it, wanted to get a permanent record of a great New York image but just thought a straight up photo was too boring. This is my first attempt at a composite image, it works pretty well but I'll have to try using some of the other sets I shot. There's also a black and white version.

This is a sporadically updated photolog -- I like it and I think it's worth a look. You don't have to post every day to have a worthwhile web site (although it does help the traffic.)

Another one of the Holga shots from Vietnam. I didn't take a ton, and a lot of them were on the underexposed side. But I have to say that relative to the number of frames I took, there were a good number of fairly interesting images.

I'm working my way through scanning a few of the film shots I took with the Holga while in Vietnam. The exposures aren't exactly what I'd want them to be (I'd hate to be trying to print these on photo paper.) Still, even for just these few photos, it's a blast -- the images are a lot more organic, and it's just a welcome change of pace from digital shots. Makes me want to pull out a small 35mm rangefinder and try shooting that for a while.

Calibrating (or Not) the Dell 2709W LCD

| | Retweet | Share
I just bought a new monitor for the first time since 2000. I had a great 16" SGI LCD I bought when they got out of that business -- $600 for what was a $3000 monitor at the time. But it was getting obvious that it was time to replace the old screen, so I bought a Dell 27" UltraSharp Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor to replace it. It's a $1000 but when I did the math on the cost per hour of my last LCD it was obvious that I get my money's worth -- it came to less than $0.06 per hour or so, roughly.

So far, it seems to be pretty good -- but I'm having a bear of a time trying to get it even moderately calibrated. A lot of reds and oranges, in particular, seem to be wildly flourescent - the Firefox logo is a primary offender. If I can't find a way to get the color under control (short of buying a calibrator) I'm going to have to return this monitor and get an Apple 23" Cinema Display or something else with more reasonable color performance.

The worst part is that Dell makes a big deal out of the color accuracy of this monitor on their web site. But then they don't really provide any great guidance on getting it calibrated properly.

Bad UI of the day

Getting a paper towel shouldn't require a numbered list...

I guess the idea of this is to reduce usage (it doesn't work - the machine doesn't dispense a long enough sheet on the first try, so you end up just repeating the procedure) but all it really does is add one extra tidbit of annoyance and cognitive load to everyone who ever uses it. There are definitely designs out there that do manage to do so, with less obstruction of the user. A good example of one design goal completely dominating the larger purpose of a device.

(Taken with the D70 and 24mm F2.8 lens I've owned for a decade. Every one in a while, that setup surprises me - the shots in this series are clearly sharper and crisper than what I'd get with the $900+ 12-24 zoom.)
